Page: Winter Storm Preparedness-Winter storms can bring extreme cold, freezing rain, sleet, heavy snowfall, ice, and high winds. Storms can also close our schools, stores, and workplaces on the mountain. We can plan now  before the weather comes in to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your home. Plan to Stay Warm: Plan to Stay Warm: Stay warm indoors to prevent frostbite and hypothermia. Before a storm, make sure you can heat your home safely. Plan to check on loved ones & neighbors to make sure they are staying warm, especially babies & older adults. Drink plenty of warm fluids but avoid caffeine & alcohol. Avoid travel if you can.  If you must go outside, plan to dress properly: keep your nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, and toes covered in warm, dry clothing. These are the first to be at risk for frostbite. Wear layers of loose clothing, a coat, hat, mittens, & water-resistant boots. Use a scarf to cover your face and mouth. Know where you will go if your home becomes too cold. You could go to a friend's home, a library, or a warming center (redcross.org). Gather Supplies: Gather food, water, and medicine before a winter storm. Stores might be closed, and it may be unsafe to travel. Ensure you have enough food, water, and supplies. Ensure you have enough warm clothing and blankets. You may lose access to drinking water; set aside drinking water for your family, and plan to have medications and medical supplies to carry you through the storm. Have a snow shovel and ice-melting products to keep walkways safe (redcross.org). Winter Pet-Safety Tips-According to Chewy.com, pet parents should limit their pet’s time outdoors when the temperature hits below 35 degrees F for dogs and 45 degrees F for cats. They recommend keeping them indoors when the temperature is 32°F or below. Keep your walks short when temperatures are freezing or below to help prevent hypothermia (paleness, shivering, lethargy) and frostbite (skin appears pale, bluish-white, or gray, & feels colder & firmer than surrounding skin to the touch; call your vet immediately).
With winter’s dry weather & low humidity, pets can become dehydrated easily. Keep your pet’s water bowl filled with plenty of fresh water (chewy.com)
